An ISSN barcode is typically created from the 8-digit ISSN number often assigned to a magazine. They are 13-digit numbers created by adding 977 to the start of the ISSN number, deleting the last digit of the ISSN number (a calculated check digit), adding a nominal price code (usually 00) and then adding a calculated checksum – this makes a 13-digit barcode number.

e.g. the ISSN number 1234-567a (where a is a checksum) becomes 977 1234567 00 x (where x is a calculated checksum)
